Shared Beliefburst onto theKentucky Derby 2014scene on Sunday, leaving highly regarded returnee Kobes Back in the dust in the Grade III Hollywood Prevue Stakes.

Shared Belief also romped in his Golden Gate debut, and he was subsequently purchased privately by Jim Romes Jungle Racing and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

In the 7f Prevue at Hollywood Park, he tracked the pace in 2nd, took over in the lane, and drew off to win by almost 8-lengths. The sharp gelding completed his final furlong in 11.76 seconds and earned a 99 BSF.

Kobes Backrallied to finish a clear 2ndin his first start in more than four months. He generated buzz after a slow start and fast finish in his June Hollywood debut for Sadler, but he owns a less than stellar route pedigree and sports the look of a late running sprinter at this stage.

At Churchill Downs on Saturday,Almost Famousran away from a promising allowance crew, including my former top ranked juvenilePurple Sky. The latter was flat as a pancake and never got involved.

Almost Famous was wearing blinkers for the first time and was in complete control throughout. The Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes might be next, and he can join my list with another impressive performance.

On Sunday, Nov. 3 at Aqueduct,Cairo Prince(Pioneerof The Nile Holy Bubbette, by Holy Bull) earned a solid 90 BSF in his G2 Nashua Stakes at one mile. He will face tougher in the 9f Remsen (G2) and will have every chance to join my list with a big effort in his next start for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

It was a big day for myKentucky Derby 2014contenders in the Grade I Breeders Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, November 2.

New Years Day wins 2013 BC Juvenile photo by Eclipse Sportswire

Three of my originalexceptional elevenDerby contenders competed in the BC Juvenile, and they took down the top three spots.

New Years Dayrose to the occasion for Bob Baffert, coming off a layoff and running down G1 Champagne heroHavana. They both finished in front of front runnerStrong Mandate.

New Years Dayowns a promising pedigree and might have the most potential.Havanahas a ton of raw talent but might have distance limitations. D. Wayne Lukas will giveStrong Mandateevery opportunity to make the Derby starting gate.

The winning 2013 BC Juvenile BSF was a respectable 88. Last years Juvenile was a negative prep. The 2011 BC Juvenile was a key race. The 2013 edition probably falls somewhere in between.

Machiavellian(Mr. Prospector Coup de Folie, by Halo) was a group one winner in France. He retired with four wins from seven starts and earnings of $355,790. In addition to Street Cry, he sired 47 stakes winners including Dubai World Cup winner Almutawakel.

New Years Day has a nice blend of speed and stamina throughout his pedigree, and ten furlongs on the first Saturday in May could easily be within his grasp. He is lightly raced, improving, and has plenty of upside for Bob Baffert.

Havana dueled through honest splits of :22.87 and :45.54. He opened up a 2-1/2 length lead after six panels in 1:10.12 and widened his advantage to 4-1/2 lengths in the lane.

The Champagne was not ready to be uncorked withHonor Codewas flying home on the outside, but he came up a tad short in a gallant effort.Ride On Curlinwas well clear of the rest in 3rd. The final time was 1:35.81, which translated to a solid 93 BSF.

We Miss Artieis a Grade I winner on paper after capturing Keenelands Breeders Futurity, but he only received a 70 BSF for his winning effort. He needs to run much faster if he expects to be competitive on Breeders Cup day.

Sundays Grade III Grey Stakes winnerAmis Holidaygarnered an 80 BSF against three opponents.

This is only my second Kentucky Derby 2014 contenders blog, and at this early stage, my original exceptional eleven contenders remain intact despite some disappointing efforts. Ride On Curlin ran fast enough to be considered and will have every chance to join my list with another strong performance.

Havanas hot freshman sireDunkirk(Unbridleds Song Secret Status, by A.P. Indy) had a brief but productive 5-race career in 2009, beginning with a debut maiden win at Gulfstream Park in January.

Dunkirk captured an allowance race in Florida second time out, and followed that up with a 2ndin the Florida Derby, a troubled 11thplace finish in the Kentucky Derby, and a 2ndplace effort in the Belmont Stakes. He suffered a condylar fracture to his left hind cannon bone during the Test of Champions and was unable to return to the races. He stands at Ashford Stud in Versailles, KY.

Dunkirks late sireUnbridleds Song(Unbridled Trolley Song, by Caro) captured the G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile in 1995 and won the G1 Florida Derby and G2 Wood Memorial as a sophomore. Plagued by tender feet, he finished 5thas the beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby.

As a stallion, Unbridleds Song was responsible for more than 100 stakes winners including 2013 G1 Travers hero Will Take Charge.

Unbridleds Songs sireUnbridled(Fappiano Gana Facil, by Le Fabuleux) won the G1 Florida Derby, G1 Kentucky Derby, and G1 BC Classic in 1990. He earned more than $4.4 million on the racetrack and sired classic winners Grindstone, Red Bullet, and Empire Maker.

Dunkirks motherSecret Status(by A.P. Indy) took the G1 Kentucky Oaks and G1 Mother Goose in 2000.

Secret Statuss papaA.P. Indywon the G1 Hollywood Futurity in 1991 to end his juvenile season. In 1992, he captured the G2 San Rafael, G1 SA Derby, G2 Peter Pan, and G1 Belmont Stakes. He wrapped up his stellar career with a victory in the G1 BC Classic.

A.P. Indy is a son of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, out of Secretariat mare Weekend Surprise. She was also the dam of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall.

Havanas motherMissy Turtlewas a 4-time dirt sprint winner ($103,283 earnings) from 2000-04.

Missy Turtles fatherKyles Our Man(by In Reality) won the G3 Nashua as a juvenile in 1990 and the G2 Gotham as a 3yo in 1991.

Missy Turtles motherRedding Ridge(by Screen King) won 7 of 37 starts and earned more than $164k, including wins in the 1988 Dearly Precious Stakes, and the 1989 Alma North Handicap and Dearly Precious Stakes.

Havana has more speed than stamina influences in his pedigree, especially on the dam side. He could stay two turns, up to nine furlongs, and possibly beyond, if he learns to relax and better distribute his available energy.

This is my first in a series of blogs devoted toKentucky Derby 2014contenders. Once again, I am getting an early start in September, and there will be many twists and turns in the months ahead.

Eight of the last thirteen Kentucky Derby winners graduated by October 4, including six of the last eight. Kentucky Derby 2012 heroIll Have Anothercaptured his career debut at Hollywood Park on July 3 of his juvenile season.

Kentucky Derby 2013 winnerOrblost his first three juvenile outings. He graduated at the Big A on November 24, 2012, his first of five straight wins, culminating in a scintillating off the pace tally under the Twin Spires on May 4.

An ideal Kentucky Derby contender would have a solid juvenile foundation, a long-winded pedigree, sharp graded stakes form, running style versatility, and winning connections. Strong pre-Derby works are the icing on the cake.
